HISTORY OF DEPARTMENT

The Department of Food Technology was established in 1978 with the original name of the Department of Processing under the Faculty of Animal Husbandry – Fisheries – Processing. In 1981, the Department of Processing was separated to form the Faculty of Preservation & Processing of Agricultural Products, later renamed the Faculty of Food Technology. Since 1996, according to the development requirements of Can Tho University, the Faculty of Food Technology has been transformed into the Department of Food Technology under the Faculty of Agriculture & Applied Biology until October 2022. Latest, the Department of Food Technology merged into the Institute of Food & Biotechnology equipped with scientific modern investment in facilities and infrastructure from the Can Tho University Improvement Project from November 2022

During 44 years of formation and development processes, the Department has constantly strived and developed strongly.  Today, the Department has 15 teaching staff, 2 laboratory staff and 03 researchers from 04 specialized laboratories: Food Technology, Food Microbiology, Food Biotechnology and Food Nutrition.  The staff has been trained to improve their qualifications from developed countries such as Belgium, Japan, Korea, Australia, France, Thailand, and Vietnam. The department currently has 94% of lecturers with PhD or higher degrees, including 03 Professors, 03 Associate Professors, 08 PhD holders and 01 PhD student.  

Nowadays, the Department of Food Technology offers high quality food technology program and food technology program to nearly 1300 students. For graduate level, the Department is training 35 master students and 15 PhD students for the research-oriented (applied) Food Technology master's degree; master’s program taught in English and PhD degree. Up to today, the Department has trained more than 5000 technical staff with undergraduate and graduate degrees who are working all over the country, focusing mainly on the Mekong Delta regions and the southern provinces. 

For many years, the department has been participating in many research activities, technology transfer as well as international cooperation.  Highly practical research projects are researched with a variety of raw materials from agricultural products in the Mekong Delta. These topics have been applied and transferred at local enterprises, contributing to promoting the economy of the Mekong Delta. 

To growth and develop optimally, the department not only receives the efforts of staff but also from the support of the University, ministries, localities and especially from alumni who have worked everywhere.  Along with new equipment and facilities investment, the Department will make further strides in the fields of training, scientific research, technology transfer and international cooperation.
